It is common to experience mild swelling, bruising, and pain after a breast biopsy. The following instructions will help minimize these side effects.

• Apply an icepack to the biopsy site for 20 minutes on and off for the first 24-48 hours.

• For pain relief, Tylenol or Advil are recommended, avoid aspirin. If taking Advil or Alleve, use the blue “gel-caps” as they won’t cause stomach irritation.

• It is recommended you wear a supportive sports bra for 24-48 hours, even when you sleep. Try to avoid sleeping on the affected breast.

• You may shower after 24 hours. No soaking in a bathtub or swimming for 5-7 days.

• You will have steri-strips in place. Leave them intact for 3-4 days or until they begin to curl and peel off.  It is OK to remove them at that time, if they haven’t fallen off.

• If the biopsy area becomes red and inflamed, please contact our office at 404.841.6262. Mild bruising around the biopsy is normal and expected.

• Biopsy results may take anywhere from 3-5 days; we will contact you with the results as soon as they are available!
